Elizabeth was by husband Mike Todd’s side as he took home the Best Motion Picture Oscar for Around the World in 80 Days at the 29th Academy Awards on March 27, 1957. Moments after winning, Mike declared to reporters assembled backstage that he won “the two biggest prizes in Hollywood in one year”—the Academy Award and Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth was pregnant with their daughter, Liza, who would be born in August, completing the couple’s happiness.

Earlier that evening, Elizabeth had presented the Costume awards, one of which went to Irene Sharaff (The King and I), who would begin a working relationship with Elizabeth a few years later on Cleopatra. The ceremony aired live from the Pantages Theater in Hollywood and Century Theater in New York, the last time the Oscars were held on both coasts.
